South Florida investors and startups are trying to catch the latest wave in renewable energy - the hunt for biodiesel sources that won't gobble up food supplies.
In recent months, skyrocketing prices for food and oil are creating a new dynamic in renewable fuels markets. Everyone is searching for alternatives to petroleum, but the food situation is tightening demand for corn and soybean sources.
Answers to this dilemma might lie in odd places - pond scum, french fry grease and an obscure shrub called jatropha, to name a few examples.
